The Work of Legambiente Volontariato Verona in the Bastions

Legambiente Volontariato Verona was given charge of the Bastion of San Bernardino in 1995. By that time, the entire structure was nearly destroyed due to the force of time and nature. The defensive ditch was nearly covered with trash and the walls were filled with wild vegetation that was slowly destroying it. Almost no visible traces were left of the Bastion, which was disappearing under the constant growing vegetation.

The Bastion of Santo Spirito

The Bastion of Santo Spirito, like the Bastion of San Bernardino, was destroyed by the French army, on Napoleon’s orders, in 1801, before the evacuation of the city. The purpose destroying these military structures was to prevent the next occupants of having an already set defense structure on the right side of the river. Thus, the Austrian empire assigned the architect Franz von Scholl the task of designing and rebuilding these defenses.

The Bastion of San Bernardino

The Bastion of San Bernardino gets its names from the nearby church of San Bernardino. It was common, in Verona, to name military buildings after churches in the nearby area.
